06 Dec 2010 – Airlie Beach to Townsville

This morning started with a hot interior of the van.  Once the sun hits the van it warms up very quickly.  We are so glad we bought the little fan since the movement of air at night does help make things feel cooler even if it is not.  However, before you think I am complaining, I assure you that I am not since this hot, humid sunny weather is better than hot humid rainy weather.
As we headed over to have breakfast we discovered all our food stored in the camp kitchen fridge was missing.  Now our van has a 12 volt refrigerator, but we are not able to run the fridge more than 8 hours without recharging the rec battery.  So since we have been here for 3 days we moved the perishable food into bags and stored them in the camp kitchen fridge.  This discovery of the missing food was not welcome since it had our breakfast stuff in it (milk, bread, butter, jam, peanut butter and cheese).  We checked around and it seems that there were a few other things taken but only us who lost the entire food bag.  Now this is not pleasant but not serious either in that there was likely only $15.00 worth of food but since we had no breakfast we also went out for breakfast so add another $15.00.  Total cost to us we figured to be around $30.00 – oh well what can you do?
So after going out for breakfast and stopping at Coles (grocery store and no relationship to Wes) to restock we headed down the highway.  Today we head off to Townsville which is about half way to Cairns.  Before we left we chatted with a couple for England who we have talked to for the past 3 days and learned they were also heading towards Townsville and were interested in the blog as well, so we exchanged email addresses and we have officially added Joe and Michelle as new friends who we hope to touch base with when we get to England as well as stay in touch about our individual travel plans.
The drive was not too long and really not all that exciting so I have little to add.  However, clouds are starting to creep back in so maybe we will find some rain tomorrow but I sure hope not.
Townsville is the largest city in this area of Queensland and has many government offices as well as a army base.  However, when we asked around about anything touristy to do we were told to go to the Aqurium which has the largest salt water coral displays in the world.  We learned that these live coral displays also house a large variety of coral sea fish and turtles.  We enjoyed ourselves as we spent a couple of hours.  Here are some pictues I took, but I  should mention that with the poor lighting, the thick plastic walls and the movement of the fish I felt that I did not get the best pictures possible, but you can see at least what it looked like.
After we finished there we returned to the campsite to enjoy some downtime at the pool and a nice dinner.   This evening is the first time that we have had to put on mossie repellant but I suspect it will not be the last. We will see.  Tomorrow is the final push to Cairns and then we have only 7 days left to complete the list of things we want to do.  We will have to just wait and see how that goes.
