There is not much to share on this day. We awoke to cloudy skies and the threat of rain but it was not raining. After we finished our breakfast and got organized we decided to drive walk along the beach to at least see what we could of Fraser Island. It was a beautiful walk and with the cloud layer very comfortable.
We walked about 1 km to the Urangan Pier which goes out into the bay a very long way. This bay is very shallow with sand bars visible when the tide is out. At one time the pier was put into place to provide railway tracks out in the bay so cargo could be loaded and unloaded unto ships. Today it is a walking pier with fishermen fishing off the sides the full length. We did see some small fish landed but that was to be used for bait apparently. We headed back to start the drive for today which we knew would be a long drive of about 450 km.
It was not long that we started to drive that the rain started to fall. We had a wonderful walk so we were not complaining too much. Fortunately the new wiper blade is working as it should. The drive however was not really exciting since it was a drive in the rain and limited views.
We arrived to Kinka Beach to a drizzling rain. Now Karen had taken us on some interesting back roads to get here and often we were driving through sections warning of often flooding happening with measuring sticks on the side of the road so you would know how deep the water was crossing the road. We encountered only one very shallow trickle that crossed the road but we were wondering about the rain we were expecting based on the clouds. However the back country roads were beautiful to drive through.
We got to the campsite and found a spot to set up close to the kitchen. This camp kitchen is an enclosed one so we were happy to have it to sit in during the evening. After setting up we immediately headed down to the beach to enjoy a walk. The tide was out and starting to come back in so there was lots of beach to walk. Unfortunately I had forgot to bring the camera along so the pictures I have of the beach were actually taken the next morning and not this evening as we walked.
We met a couple who were standing in the water up to their calves fishing off the beach. I thought this strange since the water was so shallow you could see the sand bars way off shore. But apparently they were fishing for a Sand White Fish (so they told me) that come in with the tide and start to bite about now. They seem to know what they were doing but I have not seen any evidence of fish either on our way up the beach or on our way back. Regardless I was thinking about the sign posted by the entrance to the beach about stingers and wondered if I would be standing in the water at all…. And decided nope.
As we headed back to the campsite it started to rain on us and we managed to get back just before the skies opened up and really poured. The downpour was similar to yesterday at Hervey Bay and it continued all night. We awoke the next morning to it still raining hard. How nice is that.
By the way, we did discover that the Cane toads love the rainy weather. As we stepped out of the camp kitchen we saw toads everywhere. Apparently these toads are poisonous throughout their life and were introduced to Australia from Hawaii. Here they have not predator so it is not hard to see why they thrive. They do not attach so that was a relief but really when you are walking around in the dark and things start to jump all around you might be a bit startled. I was!
