01 Dec 2010 - Brisbane to Hervey Bay

Today was a day for traveling again on our way north.  The weather looks a bit cloudy and it is likely not to be a good day but no matter we will make the best of it.   As we waited for the day to get started so we could drive out of Brisbane (told rush hour calms down by 9 am so we were on hold for a bit).  While we were waiting a older gentleman stopped by to chat.  He was the owner of the park and just wanted to chat.  What an interesting character he was.  He is a self made man who now owns several properties including 3 ranch/farms.   He was sharing a bit of his life story and it was worth listening to for sure.
By 9 we were on the road heading through the downtown of Brisbane.  Of course we had to get onto the highway and we got very frustrated as we kept finding roads that were blocked or re-routed.  Actually it was a bit funny, like going in circles getting closer and closer each trip around until we hit the bulls-eye – the entrance to the highway.  Needless to say it was not funny at the time but in retrospect it was.
The drive through the city was uneventful.   As we headed through it started to rain.  Of course this involved turning the wipers on and learning that they were making a horrible sound.  It was not long for us to realize that the driver’s side wiper blade was off the track and the framing was scraping the window (finger nails on the chalk board experience).  This meant that we had to find a place to buy a new blade and fix the problem – but I am not sure where to find Canadian Tire in Australia.  What to do?
Ok I am not totally helpless, and we found a store and asked for directions.  Then I had to find the right wiper for the van – but this is an import van and the van name is not the same as the models sold here.  Fortunately the young man at the store was able to find a cross reference table and that helped.  Success and just in time as we headed on to Hervey Bay which is where the ferry goes to Fraser Island.  We arrived to a downpour which is the second time we have had such a heavy rainfall since we arrived to Australia.
We settled in and found the camp kitchen where all the campers were sitting around waiting for the rain to stop.  We have not been able to get out to do any sightseeing today as a result.  The weather has been checked and it is going to be raining for the next couple of days (although right now as I write this it is really pleasant out).  Wes and I have decided not to spend the $300 per person to go on a trip over to Fraser Island especially if it is raining.  We hear that it is really great but that it also involves 2 days with one night on the island.  Also this has to be set up a day ahead so in total it involves 3 days time.  We may regret the decision but while it was raining it was an easy one to make.
For all intensive purposes this is all to tell about today.  Not the greatest but while sitting in the Camp kitchen we have had great discussions with other travelers so not really a bad day.
