22 Dec 2010 – Rotorua to Taurewa

This morning we plan to travel on to Taurewa to hopefully be able to trek the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on Thursday.   The weather reports indicate that this would be the best day this week to do the crossing.  As we headed towards Taurewa the clouds got darker and the rain started to close in.   This was not part of the plan.  But we never know what to expect down the road so we travelled onward.
Along the way we have decided to stop at Huka Falls to enjoy looking at an energetic and fast flowing water way leading to the falls.  Over 2000 liters of water flow over the falls every second.   The height of the falls is only 9 meters but the undertow created by the volume of water creates a hazard for anyone getting too close.   For those interested there is a boat ride you can pay to be taken close to the base of the falls (reminded us of “Maid of the Mist in Niagara).

We arrived at the camp grounds to the pelting down of rain and no indication that there was a hope of it stopping.  We had no problem getting a place to park and when we asked about availability through Christmas Day we were assured that they would ensure we had a place if we decided to stay.  We  were not sure how long we will be staying especially if it continued to rain.
By the evening the rain has slowed down and looked like it would stop and we had found out that the crossings would be going tomorrow – first time in a week that the crossings would be possible.  We also learned that the shuttle service would pick us up at the campsite and take us to the trail head and pick us up at the end of the trail and bring us back which was great news.  We signed up.   Now to get to bed early because we have to be up by 5:30 so we can be ready for the 7 am shuttle.  By the way, there is no cell service here so there is no internet access.
