19 Nov 2010 – Robe, SA to Benalla, VIC

This was the day to re-position and plan by cutting Adelaide out of our trip.  We calculate that it was another day’s drive to get there, then we were thinking of Kangaroo Island, do some sightseeing in Adelaide area and then driving back to Canberra.  When we added up the days to do this we felt we would need to use about 5 or 6 days and there just is not enough time left if we are going to get to Cairns.
Oh well we set up Karen to direct us back towards Canberra and it is 1200 km by the shortest distance so we drove about 800 km today to Benalla and will complete the trip tomorrow – well maybe.  Wes is checking out the Blue Mountains so maybe tomorrow there and then the next day to Canberra.  We calculate that if we average 150 km per day from now on we will be in Cains as scheduled.  This means we average 2 hours of driving per day and spend time stopping, tromping and sightseeing.  Of course this is on average and is not how we plan to travel.   I guess you will have to follow along to see what happens.

We finally hit the road in a beautiful sunny morning traveling away from the coast.  We felt so much like we were travelling through the prairies back home – (ok driving on the wrong side of the road but really).  We passed fields of grains, hayfields, dairy farms, sheep herds and several vineyards.  What an amazing array of options for crops in this part of the world.  But it was flat!!!!

We did stop in one town to have lunch – note our local café.  This town could be any small prairie town in the way it looked and felt.  Very comfortable, laid back and with very few people.  We also commented several times that there really was very little traffic on the highway.  Speaking of the highway, these highways have speed limits of 110 – and they are not that wide with very little shoulders and often non signed corners (bends in the road) but with no traffic coming our way we actually have a wide lane to use for driving.  Trees often lined the road and hung over creating a beautiful canopy.

We finally arrived to Benalla around 5:30 making this a very long driving day.  Tomorrow is to be less of a day of driving and more sightseeing.  Look for the pictures then.
