16 Nov 2010 – Melbourne to Torquay

This morning we got up to a cloudy day but much warmer.  This was going to be a relocation day with much of it getting the campervan, stocking it up, and organizing the gear.  Fortunately we were able to leave our cases at the hotel so we did not need to travel on the metro again with them, but this meant that we would have to drive back to the hotel before leaving Melbourne.
We found the rental agency extremely helpful and we both felt very comfortable with the campervan.  It is a much newer one than the Wicked campervan.  When you open the back gate you have a sink on the left, an electric fridge box in the middle and a counter, rollout stove and a cupboard on the right.  We ended spending quite a bit of time setting up our things since this time we will be living out of the van for over 4 weeks.  Amazingly we managed.

Once we finally hit the road we had to ensure that we missed any of the toll roads in the city.  There is no way to pay directly while driving the highway.  If you live in the city you likely have an electronic device in your car and get billed monthly.  For visitors you have to pay $10 a day for a pass to use the tolls or avoid them.  If you go on a toll road without prepaying and registering your vehicle you get a $100 fine for each toll station you pass plus a $45 administration fee.  Needless to say we stressed about ensuring we missed the toll roads.

We managed to find a campsite and got settled.  Today was laundry day so we spent the afternoon in camp.  However, after dinner we headed over to Torquay Beach where surfing competitions are held.  We walked along the beach to the other beach were there were lots of surfers in the water.  This beach was Jan Sur Beach and I was able to take some pictures of surfers.

As we left the sunset was amazing.
